Symptoms

When you attempt to install the software, the setup fails with an error message similar to the following:

Error 1603: Fatal Error During Installation

Possible Resolution

This error is a genereric error returned by the Windows Installer, and can be caused by many things. The following sections describes steps you should try to resolve the issue. If after making the changes described here the installation still fails, please contact us for further assistance.

Make sure you are running the installation as an Administrator

If you are not logged on under an account that is a member of the Administrators group for the computer, retry the installation under an Administrator account.

Check for sufficient disk space and empty the TEMP folder

  • Make sure there is sufficient disk space on the disk drive to which you are installing the software, on the drive where Windows is installed (if different) and on the drive where the TEMP directory is located (if different).
  • Remove all files and folders from the TEMP directory.

Note: The TEMP directory may not be named "temp." To find the TEMP directory, open a command prompt and type "set". In the list of environment variables displayed, note the folders for the "TEMP" and "TMP" variables and clear those folders.

Check the DCOM default permissions on the computer

Check the default DCOM access permissions for your computer, and change them as necessary, as described at http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108324.

Check the DCOM identity settings for the InstallShield applications

Using the DCOM configuration tool (as described in the previous section), review the properties for each DCOM application named "InstallShield InstallDriver" or "InstallShield InstallDriver String Table" (there may be more than one instance of each). In the application's properties, go to the Identity tab and change the setting to The launching user.

Reinstall the InstallShield engine

Delete the contents of the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Driver\9

Then download http://support.installshield.com/kb/files/Q108322/ISScript9.zip. Extract the MSI file from the ZIP and double-click it to install the InstallShield scripting engine.
